The basics

What is couples counseling?

Couples counseling is structured therapy where both partners work with a clinician on communication, conflict, and emotional connection. In practice since November 2017, our team uses psychodynamic therapy, CBT, and solution-focused therapy. Call us to verify your insurance and get matched with a clinician.

Most couples come in because partners keep having the same fight without any resolution, and neither person feels heard. Sessions give you tools to continue your treatment on your own time between appointments, not just in the room.

How it works

How couples therapy sessions work

Five steps from your first call to skills you keep using between appointments.

1

Call us with your insurance card

We verify whether your plan covers couples sessions before you book. Medi-Cal is one of several insurances we accept, and we check with you first.

2

Get matched with a clinician

We'll match you with a clinician who has openings. If the fit is off, we match you with another clinician in the practice.

3

Set your session goals together

In the first session, your clinician identifies each partner's unmet needs and drafts shared treatment goals. No session starts without a clear purpose.

4

Meet in person or by video

Sessions run at our Cerritos office at 17215 Studebaker Rd. or over telehealth statewide. Same therapist, either way.

5

Build skills between sessions

Your clinician sends you practical exercises to use between appointments. Treatment length follows your medical necessity, not a session quota.

Why us

Why couples choose Eye Cue Mental Health

Private-practice couples counseling on the insurance you already carry, with the same clinician in person or by video.

Insurance accepted, including Medi-Cal

Most couples counseling near Cerritos is cash-pay at $185 or more per session. We accept Medi-Cal, Anthem Medi-Cal, Blue Shield Promise Medi-Cal, Cigna, Aetna, LA Care, and Molina. We verify before your first appointment.

Same therapist, in person or by video

Big telehealth platforms assign whoever is available. At Eye Cue, your clinician is yours whether you sit in our office or join by video from anywhere in California. You keep the same therapeutic relationship.

Therapy in your language

Our team delivers sessions in English, Spanish, Farsi, Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi. Real fluency, not a phone translator. Visit our therapy services page to learn more about language-specific care.

Treatment length based on your needs

"Treatment length is based on your medical necessity. No one is pulling the strings. You are in charge of your treatment." That is how founder Saqib Iqbal, LCSW, describes how sessions are set. No algorithm decides when your couples therapy ends.

If the fit is off, we match you again

If you or your partner does not connect with your assigned clinician, we match you with another clinician in the practice. You do not have to start the insurance process over.

Open weekends and evenings

Our Cerritos office is open 7 days a week, 8 AM to 10 PM. Most Medi-Cal mental health clinics in LA County are closed on weekends. We are not.

What it helps with

Reasons couples come to therapy

The patterns partners bring to couples counseling most often, in person in Cerritos or by video across California.

Recurring conflict

Partners cycle through the same arguments without resolution. Therapy helps both people name what is underneath the fight.

Communication breakdown

One or both partners feels unheard. Sessions build tools to express needs and listen in a way that actually lands.

Life transitions

A new baby, a job loss, a move, or a diagnosis can shift the balance in a relationship faster than a couple can adjust.

Emotional distance

Closeness fades over time. Therapy reconnects partners to each other and to what they value about the relationship.

Trust and repair

A breach of trust takes work to rebuild. Our clinicians help partners move through it at a pace that is honest about the difficulty.

One partner struggling

Sometimes one partner is dealing with depression, anxiety, or stress. When that goes unaddressed, the relationship feels the weight. We also offer individual therapy as a sibling service.

Coverage

Insurance often covers couples counseling here

Eye Cue Mental Health accepts Medi-Cal, Anthem Medi-Cal, Blue Shield Promise Medi-Cal, Cigna, Aetna, LA Care, and Molina. Whether your specific plan covers a couples session depends on your plan and medical necessity. Call us with your card and we check together before you book.

We do not charge a separate self-pay rate list on this page because most of our clients are covered. If you are not on one of these plans, call us and we will be direct about whether we can help.

Good questions

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Call 562-860-2891 and we will talk it through, no commitment.

In our sessions we focus on the unmet needs underneath recurring fights, which is where communication and conflict most often get stuck. Our team uses 3 approaches: psychodynamic therapy, CBT, and solution-focused therapy. Ask your clinician which approach fits your situation best.

Start when the same argument cycles without resolution and neither partner can break the pattern alone. You do not need a crisis to begin. Earlier work on communication and unmet needs is easier than repair after long-term emotional distance.

Start individual therapy first. One partner beginning individual psychotherapy often changes the dynamic enough that the other becomes willing. If your partner is ready later, we can transition to joint sessions with the same or a different clinician.

Yes, Medi-Cal is one of several insurances we hold contracts with. Whether your specific plan covers a given couples session depends on your plan and medical necessity, and we verify before you start. Call us at 562-860-2891 with your insurance card.

We match you with a clinician with current openings. Call us at 562-860-2891 to ask about current availability. We do not publish a specific wait-time number because it changes week to week.

We reassign you to another clinician in the practice. You do not lose your place in the insurance process. The goal is a good fit for both partners, and we work through that with you.

Come with a rough sense of what you each want to stop, and what you want more of. Your clinician handles the structure. If you want to read ahead, family therapy at Eye Cue covers some of the same communication tools used in couples work.
