The basics
What does family therapy actually address?
Family therapy addresses the patterns that keep a household stuck, not just the behavior that triggered the call. Our clinicians at Eye Cue Mental Health work with the specific dynamic in the room, whether that is a child who shuts down, a teenager who escalates, or two parents who cannot agree on how to respond. Each session is shaped around what your family actually needs rather than a fixed protocol that ends on a set date.
Many parents describe wanting their child to have tools to continue their treatment on their own time. That is one of the goals every clinician here works toward. Our individual therapy sessions follow the same model, with treatment driven by your clinical picture rather than a session cap.
How it works
How our family sessions work
Four steps from your first call to skills your household keeps using between appointments.
First call
You call 562-860-2891. We ask about your insurance, confirm coverage, and match you with a clinician whose approach fits your family's situation.
Initial session
We meet together, hear what each person is experiencing, and set goals that make sense for your household.
Ongoing work
Sessions run at a cadence your clinician recommends based on medical necessity, not an algorithm. Stay on telehealth, come in person to our Cerritos office, or switch between the two with the same therapist.
Progress check
When goals shift, the plan shifts with them. Treatment length is based on your medical necessity, not a session quota.
Why us
Why families choose Eye Cue over a community clinic
Private-practice family therapy on the insurance you already carry, with the same clinician in person or by video.
Private-practice setting, not a community clinic
No metal detectors. No waiting-room turnover. No intake worker who hands you off to someone new each visit. Many families have walked away from a county program feeling processed, not helped. This is a quiet private practice.
The same clinician, session after session
Your family works with the same therapist each visit, in person or by video. That continuity matters most when a child is just starting to build trust in the room.
If the fit is off, we match you again
If the fit is not right, we match you with another therapist in the practice rather than sending you back to square one. You do not start your insurance authorization over.
Treatment length driven by medical necessity
We do not operate on an algorithm, and no one is pulling the strings on how long you stay in care. Treatment is driven by your clinical picture, not by a session cap.
Therapy in your language
Our multilingual team includes clinicians who speak Spanish, Farsi, Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi. Extended-family dynamics and cultural expectations all belong in the room.
Open weekends and evenings
Our Cerritos office is open 7 days a week, 8 AM to 10 PM. Most Medi-Cal mental health clinics in LA County are closed on weekends. We are not.
Who it helps
Who we work with in family therapy
Family dynamics show up differently for every household. These are the situations we most often work with.
Children and parents
Children who struggle to communicate with parents find a space here where being honest does not lead to punishment. Parents get real tools, not just validation.
Teens and families
Adolescents often feel unheard. Our teen-focused clinicians know how to reach teenagers in ways that do not read as lectures, while keeping parents meaningfully in the loop. See our teen therapy services for more on adolescent work.
Multi-generational households
Extended-family dynamics, cultural expectations, and intergenerational conflict all belong in the room. Our multilingual team includes clinicians who speak Spanish, Farsi, Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi.
Children learning to name emotions
Kids often do not have the words for what is going on inside them. That is not defiance, it is a development gap that shows up as tantrums, withdrawal, or acting out at school. Our clinicians teach children to name and express emotions in ways parents can respond to.
Families using evidence-based approaches
Clinicians here use evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, and narrative therapy to build skills that stick.
Parents and partners under strain
When two parents cannot agree on how to respond, the conflict spreads through the whole household. We also offer couples counseling as a sibling service for partners working on the same patterns.
Coverage
What to know about insurance for family therapy
Eye Cue Mental Health accepts Medi-Cal and many private insurance plans, including Anthem Medi-Cal, Blue Shield Promise Medi-Cal, Cigna, and Aetna. Roughly 70 percent of our current caseload is on Medi-Cal, which means we have real experience navigating those plans, not just a checkbox on a directory listing. Whether your specific plan covers a given family session depends on your plan and medical necessity, and we verify your benefits before your first appointment.
The practice has accepted Medi-Cal for family, individual, and children's therapy since November 2017, now with a team of 11 clinicians. If your insurance changes, call us. We work with families through plan transitions rather than terminating care. For a full breakdown of how to use your benefits, visit our Medi-Cal therapy page. The American Psychological Association's resources on family therapy note that family-based treatment shows consistent results for a range of childhood and adolescent issues, including anxiety, behavior problems, and parent-child conflict.

Good questions
Frequently asked questions
Still unsure? Call 562-860-2891 and we will talk it through, no commitment.
Family therapy is a covered behavioral health service under Medi-Cal when it meets medical necessity criteria. We are actively contracted with Anthem Medi-Cal and Blue Shield Promise Medi-Cal. Whether your specific plan covers your sessions depends on your plan and your clinical picture, and we verify your benefits before your first appointment. Call 562-860-2891 to confirm.
That is the most common opening question we hear. A child who refuses therapy often warms up once they realize the space is not about being corrected. Our clinicians are trained to meet children where they are and to build enough trust that kids start showing up willingly. We also work with parents on how to frame the invitation at home without it feeling like punishment.
If the fit is not right, you can switch to another clinician within Eye Cue Mental Health. You will not have to start your insurance authorization over or go back to a waitlist. This is one of the things that makes a group practice different from a solo therapist.
Telehealth works well for many families, especially for follow-up sessions and families with scheduling constraints. Some families prefer to start in person to get comfortable, then move to telehealth as needed. You can switch between the two formats with the same therapist at any point, which is something most telehealth-only platforms cannot offer. Our Cerritos office is open seven days a week.
Call us when it happens. We work with families through insurance transitions rather than terminating care. We hold contracts with multiple Medi-Cal managed care plans and commercial insurers, so there is a good chance we can continue care under your new plan.
We work with both. Our adolescent work is focused on teens who feel unheard at home and who may be resistant to therapy in general. See our teen therapy page for how we approach that age group specifically.
